Endangered Animals

This book is a fantastic aid for educating children about endangered animals and the need to protect them. The plot is driven heavily by  pictures with  small sections of supporting text. It examines the causes of habitat destruction as well as the difference between endangered and extinct animals. I have used this book with children ranging from 5 to 11 and they all found it engaging. However it would probably be too easy for children over 9 who speak English as a first language.

Post- Reading

I recommend after reading the book the first time, you talk to the class about some endangered and extinct animals to make sure they understand the difference,  then read the book again.

Extinct Examples: Dinosaurs, Quagga, Dodo, Big Eared Hopping Mouse

Endangered Examples: Macaw Parrot, Giant Pandas, Gorillas, Oranguatans, Elephants, Whales, Bald Eagle, Koalas, and Tigers.

Worksheets

These worksheets are all based around the book.  The answers are in the book which is why it is important for the class to read it more than once so that they are very familiar with the concepts.

1. Endangered animals: read and fill in the blanks

2. What are the main reasons animals become endangered?

3.Extinct vs Endangered animals

Extension Activity

If you feel that your class is capable, you could ask them to write or present a report about an endangered species.
