Childrens Books

AWEN Childrens Book Recommendations

AWEN have selected books that we feel send either a positive message about animals, conservation or the environment. So often childrens literature  uses animals to make human centric stories more interesting and colourful. However we feel that ‘personifying’ animals in literature does nothing to educate and develop empathy in children. The stories on this list aim to educate and develop empathy for animals as they really are.

This is a story about a man who wanted to reach the stars. He destroyed the Earth is his quest to reach the elusive star in the sky but when he finally gets there he notices how beautiful Earth looks from a distance. In the mean time on Earth, the dinosaurs wake up and restore the planet to a pristine natural paradise. When the man returns he must promise to share the planet with all the other animals and plants. I think this is a lovely simple picture book that conveys a very important message. The text is relatively simple and probably best suited for children 5-8 years old.

Follow the heartwarming and true story of Christian. The lion cub bought from Harrods, raised in a Chelsea flat and finally returned to live wild and free on the African plains. Christian’s story is told in a scrapbook style, using original photographs of him as a cub. These images are both funny, moving and heart warming. The simple and accessible text , told in Christian's voice, deals with themes familiar to little ones – love, friendship, play and exploration.

ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Book Awards and 1995 Australian Picture Book of the Year winner, this thought-provoking story presents the plight of the dancing bears of Turkey and Greece. The author tells the story of a captive bear whose dreams of freedom sustain her, even while being forced to perform in a Turkish marketplace by a cruel and angry keeper. During the quiet hours when she is confined to her cage, the bear imagines a different life in which she is free to wander through mountain streams and sleep lazily with her cubs. It is a kind-hearted peasant who liberates the bear and who reminds all of those watching of an important moral lesson about dignity and life.

This book is really beautiful- both in it's written prose and photographs. It's really a collection of stories about animals who have been rescued from poor conditions on farms, cruelty cases, who have escaped from slaughterhouses etc. However, the book does not dwell on those negative conditions but takes a wholly more positive angle. It describes the character, habits, relationships/friendships (both human and non-human) that the animal develops in it's life following rescue.

Animals at Play engagingly explains how animals interact with one another for enjoyment, and how each species has its own 'rules' that make play fair and fun
