Animal Welfare in Schools

The British National Curriculum

The RSPCA have found many ways of incorporating animal welfare with the national curriculum in England and this can be extrapolated to curriculums in other countries. For example, animal welfare themes and messages can be incorporated in to art, science, citizenship and even english. The RSPCA hav done a wonderful job of scrutinizing the curriculum and designing to material to match, so we reccommend you visit their website for more information on this and come back here to download some fun materials once you are comfortable with the concepts.

TEFL/ ESL Teachers

Teachers of English as a foreign language are a vast virtually untapped resource for educating people all over the world about animal welfare. Countries like South Korea, Japan, China and middle eastern countries like Dubai employ great numbers of english teachers and they also have a notoriously poor relationship with animals.

I taught english in South Korea and it was easy to find time to teach lessons about animal welfare. There is often time left over at the end of a syllabus so rather than waste time playing cards or other board games with the children, I taught english using animal welfare themes. It’s great because all children love learning about animals and they get to widen their vocabulary, read a wider variety of material and it breaks up the monotony of learning about very basic subject like jobs, doing words, food, shopping etc.
